Calabar, Camperdown on top in ISSA U16 Basketball League

DEFENDING champions Calabar High and Camperdown High are clear leaders in Zones A and B, respectively, in the 2017/2018 ISSA Southern Conference High Schoolboys Under-16 basketball league following the latest round of action on Thursday.

The Ludloo Barker-coached Calabar aggregation from Red Hills Road was beaten 44-45 in an exciting thriller by Wolmer's Boys' School, while the East Kingston-based Camperdown, coached by Oneil Ebanks, registered a comfortable 55-37 win over Campion College.

Despite the defeat, Calabar, who are also the defending National All-Island Under-16 champions, remained leaders of Zone A with 24 points from 12 games, winning 10 and losing two. They have completed their preliminary round of matches and have qualified for the next round.

Meanwhile, Camperdown are currently the dominant team in Zone B as they have won 12 games from as many starts to be the only unbeaten team in the Under-16 competition. They have maximum 24 points and have also qualified for the next round.

Jamaica College (JC) and Campion College are in second place in Zones A and B with 21 and 19 points, respectively. JC have one game in hand, while Campion have four outstanding matches to complete their schedule.

Zone C has been completed with St Jago High and Old Harbour High finishing in the top two places with seven points each from four games, winning three and losing one apiece. St Catherine were third with four points. Both Guy's Hill High and Dinthill Technical had withdrawn from the competition.

In Wolmer's Boys' School's over Calabar, Kyle Outer scored 15 points for the winners, while for the losers Jalen Brown got 15 points including seven assists.

In Camperdown's victory, the principal scorers were Matthew McGowan with a game-high 27 points and Alrich Morris with 11 points, while Alexander Boyd got 13 points for the losers.

In other games, Jamaica College (JC) got the better of Ardenne High 49-44 at Jamaica College on Thursday. Alex Rose with 20 points and 11 rebounds was the main scorer for JC, while Lloyd Pryce with 15 points ad 11 rebounds and Manley Wisdom with 10 points led the scoring for the losers.

The competition continues today starting at 2:00 pm in the Under-16 and 3:30 pm in the Under-19 League.

POINTS STANDINGS

ZONE A — Calabar 24, JC 21, Wolmer's 17, St George's College 17, Ardenne 17, Hillel Academy 13, and Vauxhall High 10.

ZONE B — Camperdown 24, Campion College 19, Kingston College 14, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) 14, Excelsior High 14, Norman Manley High 13, Tivoli High 10, and Kingston Technical High School 6.

ZONE C — St Jago High 7, Old Harbour High 7, St Catherine High 4.
