St Mary residents protest after shop owner killed by police

Friday, January 12, 2018

OCHO RIOS, St Ann — A massive roadblock mounted by St Mary residents, angry at the fatal shooting of a man by the police Wednesday night, was eventually cleared yesterday afternoon.

The Independent Commission of Investigations is probing the shooting death of 45-year-old David McLean, also called Blessed, who operated a small shop at the intersection of Gully Road and Boscobel Main Road.

McLean was shot about 11:53 pm Wednesday after the police reportedly responded to a call to the location.

“They reported that they engaged a man and the man was fatally wounded. They reported also that they recovered a firearm,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Norman Heywood, who is in charge of the Area Two police.

But residents disputed the police report and blocked the main road in Boscobel, inconveniencing people travelling between St Mary and Ocho Rios. Some travellers resorted to alternative routes.

Initially, the residents used their bodies to block the road, but the protest later escalated with the use of debris and large items of junk.

The roadblock was cleared after National Security Minister Robert Montague, who is the member of parliament for St Mary Western, visited the scene and spoke to the residents.
